Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement RHD

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.6L and Engine Mechanical -  3.2L.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.
  4. Partially remove the intake air resonator and reposition for compressor clearance. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.

  5. Object Number: 756141  Size: SH
  6. Remove the suction line bolt (1) at the compressor.
  7. Remove the discharge line bolt (2) at the compressor.
  8. Disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor.
  9. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  10. Object Number: 799112  Size: SH
  11. Remove the nut (1) retaining the power steering line to the compressor stud.
  12. Remove the clip and line from the compressor stud.

  13. Object Number: 799113  Size: SH
  14. Remove the nut (1) retaining the power steering cooler line to the compressor stud.

  15. Object Number: 799125  Size: SH
  16. Remove the clip (1) and line from the compressor stud (2).
  17. Remove the front lower compressor stud (3).
  18. Remove the front upper compressor stud.

  19. Object Number: 799124  Size: SH
  20. Remove the rear compressor stud  (1).
  21. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
  22. Rotate the compressor and remove from the vehicle.
  23. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist. Refer to Air Conditioning Refrigerant Desiccant Replacement .
  24. • Color of PAG oil is brown or black
    • Presence of foreign substances
  25. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing .

Installation Procedure

    Important: Install the compressor with the top bolt in the compressor.

  1. Install the compressor.
  2. Connect the electrical connector.
  3. Install all compressor mounting studs finger tight.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 799124  Size: SH
  5. Tighten the compressor lower rear stud (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).


    Object Number: 799125  Size: SH
  7. Tighten the front lower compressor stud (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  9. Tighten the front upper compressor stud (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  11. Install the power steering line and bracket to lower compressor stud.
  12. Install the power steering line nut (1).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  14. Install the power steering line and clamp to rear compressor stud.

  15. Object Number: 799113  Size: SH
  16. Install the power steering line retainer nut (1).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  18. Install new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .

  19. Object Number: 756141  Size: SH
  20. Connect the suction line to the compressor.
  21. Connect the discharge line to the compressor.
  22. Install the compressor AC line bolts (1,2).
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  24. Reposition intake air resonator and install. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.
  25. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.
  26. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.6L and Engine Mechanical - 3.2L.
  27. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  28. Leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component using theJ 39400-A .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement LHD

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.6L and Engine Mechanical - 3.2L.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.
  4. Partially remove the intake air resonator and reposition for compressor clearance. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - .2L.

  5. Object Number: 756141  Size: SH
  6. Remove the suction line bolt (1) at the compressor.
  7. Remove the discharge line bolt (2) at the compressor.
  8. Disconnect the A/C lines from the compressor.
  9. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  10. Object Number: 799112  Size: SH
  11. Remove the nut (1) retaining the power steering line to the compressor stud.
  12. Remove the clip and line from the compressor stud.

  13. Object Number: 799113  Size: SH
  14. Remove the nut (1) retaining the power steering cooler line to the compressor stud.

  15. Object Number: 799125  Size: SH
  16. Remove the clip (1) and line from the compressor stud (2).
  17. Remove the front lower compressor stud (3).
  18. Remove the front upper compressor stud.

  19. Object Number: 799124  Size: SH
  20. Remove the rear compressor stud  (1).
  21. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
  22. Rotate the compressor and remove from the vehicle.
  23. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist. Refer to Air Conditioning Refrigerant Desiccant Replacement .
  24. • Color of PAG oil is brown or black
    • Presence of foreign substances
  25. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing .

Installation Procedure

    Important: Install the compressor with the top bolt in the compressor.

  1. Install the compressor.
  2. Connect the electrical connector.
  3. Install all compressor mounting studs finger tight.
  4. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  5. Tighten the compressor lower rear stud (1).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Tighten the front lower compressor stud (1).
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  9. Tighten the front upper compressor stud (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the stud to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  11. Install the power steering line and bracket to lower compressor stud.
  12. Install the power steering line nut (1).
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  14. Install the power steering line and clamp to rear compressor stud.
  15. Install the power steering line retainer nut (1).
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 8 N·m (71 lb in).

  17. Install new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .

  19. Connect the suction line to the compressor.
  20. Connect the discharge line to the compressor
  21. Install the compressor AC line bolts (1,2).
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  23. Reposition intake air resonator and install. Refer to Intake Air Resonator Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.
  24. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.6L and Engine Controls - 3.2L.
  25. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.6L and Engine Mechanical - 3.2L.
  26. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  27. Leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component using theJ 39400-A .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement LHD, LY7

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.6L.
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.6L.
  4. Remove the intake air resonator and reposition for compressor clearance. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.6L.
  5. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  6. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.

  7. Object Number: 1319371  Size: SH
  8. Remove the compressor mounting bolt (3) from the compressor.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Loosen the compressor mounting bolts (1) until the threads are disengaged.

  11. Object Number: 1207428  Size: SH
  12. Remove the suction line bolt at the compressor.
  13. Disconnect the suction line from the compressor.
  14. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  15. Object Number: 1207424  Size: SH
  16. Remove the discharge line bolt at the compressor.
  17. Disconnect the discharge line from the compressor.
  18. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  19. Object Number: 1319371  Size: SH
  20. Disconnect the electrical connector (2) from the compressor.
  21. Important: While removing the compressor from the vehicle, the power steering line may need to be flexed.

  22. Rotate the compressor. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  23. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist. Refer to Air Conditioning Refrigerant Desiccant Replacement .
  24. • Color of PAG oil is brown or black
    • Presence of foreign substances
  25. Remove the compressor mounting bolts from the compressor.
  26. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1319371  Size: SH
  1. Partially install the compressor.
  2. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the compressor mounting bolts (1) finger tight.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .
  6. Install the suction line to the compressor.
  7. Install the suction line bolt to the compressor.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  9. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .
  10. Install the discharge line to the compressor.
  11. Install the discharge line bolt to the compressor.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  13. Connect the electrical connector (2).
  14. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  15. Install the compressor mounting stud (3) finger tight.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  17. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Reposition intake air resonator and install. Refer to Air Cleaner Inlet Duct Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.6L.
  20. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 3.6L.
  21. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor and Power Steering Pump Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.6L.
  22. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  23. Leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component using the J 39400-A .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement LS6

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 5.7L.
  3. Remove the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement .
  5. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L.
  6. Remove the A/C drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L.
  7. Loosen the upper A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  8. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  9. Remove the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.

  10. Object Number: 1364519  Size: SH
  11. Disconnect the electrical connector (5) from the compressor.
  12. Remove the screw for the electrical connector mounting bracket.
  13. Necessary for clearance during the compressor removal.


    Object Number: 1364527  Size: SH
  14. Remove the suction line bolt at the compressor.
  15. Disconnect the suction line from the compressor.
  16. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  17. Object Number: 1364558  Size: SH
  18. Remove the discharge line bolt at the compressor.
  19. Disconnect the discharge line from the compressor.
  20. Remove and discard the O-ring seals.

  21. Object Number: 1364519  Size: SH
  22. Remove the compressor mounting bolts (1, 2, 3, 4).
  23. Remove the A/C hose support bracket to oil pan bolt.
  24. Lower the vehicle.
  25. Rotate the compressor. Remove the compressor from the vehicle.
  26. Replace the desiccant bag if the following conditions exist. Refer to Air Conditioning Refrigerant Desiccant Replacement .
  27. • Color of PAG oil is brown or black
    • Presence of foreign substances
  28. If you are replacing the compressor, balance the compressor oil. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing .

Installation Procedure

  1. Remove the screw for the electrical connector mounting bracket.
  2. Install the upper A/C compressor mounting bolts (1, 2, 3, 4) to the compressor.

  4. Install the A/C compressor.
  5. Install the upper compressor mounting bolts finger tight.
  6. Raise the vehicle.
  7. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  8. Install the lower A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  10. Install the electrical connector mounting bracket to the compressor.
  11. Install the screw for the electrical connector mounting bracket.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 2 N·m (17 lb in).

  13. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .
  14. Install the suction line to the compressor.
  15. Install the suction line bolt to the compressor.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  17. Install the new O-ring seals to the line fittings. Refer to O-Ring Replacement .
  18. Install the discharge line to the compressor.
  19. Install the discharge line bolt to the compressor.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  21. Connect the electrical connector (2).
  22. Install the A/C hose support bracket to oil pan bolt.
  23. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 9.8 N·m (87 lb in).

  24. Install the front air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Tighten the upper front compressor mounting bolt.
  27. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  28. Install the A/C drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L.
  29. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 5.7L.
  30. Install the condenser. Refer to Condenser Replacement .
  31. Install the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  32. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 5.7L.
  33. Evacuate and recharge the refrigerant system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  34. Leak test the fitting of the repaired or reinstalled component using the J 39400-A .
