Coolant Heater Replacement LA3, LY9, K05

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the heated oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 Sensor 1 in Engine Controls-2.6L and 3.2L.
  3. Disconnect the coolant heater power supply cord from the coolant heater.

  4. Object Number: 785734  Size: SH

    Important: A residual amount of coolant will drain from the engine block.

  5. Remove the coolant heater and seal from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the seal to the coolant heater.
  2. Notice: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the coolant heater into the engine block.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the coolant heater to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  5. Connect the coolant heater power supply cord to the coolant heater.
  6. Install the heated oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 Sensor 1 in Engine Controls-2.6L and 3.2L.
  7. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

Coolant Heater Replacement LA3, LY9, KA3

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the heated oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 Sensor 1 in Engine Controls-2.6L and 3.2L.
  3. Disconnect the coolant heater power supply cord from the coolant heater.

  4. Object Number: 785735  Size: SH

    Important: A residual amount of coolant will drain from the engine block.

  5. Remove the coolant heater and seal from the engine block.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the seal to the coolant heater.
  2. Notice: Refer to Component Fastener Tightening Notice in the Preface section.

  3. Install the coolant heater into the engine block.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the coolant heater to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  5. Connect the coolant heater power supply cord to the coolant heater.
  6. Install the heated oxygen sensor. Refer to Heated Oxygen Sensor Replacement - Bank 2 Sensor 1 in Engine Controls-2.6L and 3.2L.
  7. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

Coolant Heater Replacement LY7, KO5

Removal Procedure

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the coolant heater cord from the coolant heater.

  5. Remove the coolant heater.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1312571  Size: SH
  1. Install the coolant heater.
  2. Connect the coolant heater cord to the coolant heater.
  3. Lower the vehicle.

Coolant Heater Replacement LS6

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 673597  Size: SH
  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the tire and wheel, if necessary. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Disconnect the engine coolant heater cord from the engine coolant heater.

  4. Object Number: 673591  Size: SH
  5. Remove the engine coolant heater.
  6. Important: Take care not to damage the surface of the opening in the engine block.

  7. Clean the opening in the engine block, remove any burrs, sealing compound, or paint.

Installation Procedure

    Important: The engine coolant heater sealing washer may be reused if not bent, scored or otherwise damaged.


    Object Number: 673591  Size: SH
  1. Apply a 3.175 mm (0.125 in) bead of sealant GM P/N 12346004 (Canadian P/N 10953480) or equivalent to the engine coolant heater sealing washer.
  2. Insert the engine coolant heater.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Tighten the engine coolant heater.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the engine coolant heater to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).

  6. Install the engine coolant heater cord to the engine coolant heater.
  7. Install the tire and wheel, if necessary. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
