SOFT/HARD TOP PULL DOWN MOTOR REPLACEMENT
Some 1987 Allantes may experience a condition where the jaws of the pull down motor bend or break off of its mounting bracket, or the soft top or hard top will not pull down. This condition may be caused by improper alignment of the soft/hard top hook to the jaws of the pull down motor or the incorrect soft top operation. To repair this condition use the following procedure:
Parts required for this procedure are:
Part Name P/N --------- --- Bezel - Soft Top Cover 1646175 Motor Assembly - Soft/Hard Top Pull Down 1644990 Cover - Soft/Hard Top Pull Down 1646537 Clip - Electrical Connector 1839906
1. Remove the hard top and place it on a protected surface.
2. Raise the soft top boot cover.
3. Remove the soft top cover from the soft top cover hinge assembly and place it on a protected surface (refer to Figure 1).
4. Enlarge the hole on the soft top boot cover into the shape shown in Figure 1, View A by using template made from Figure 2.
5. Install Bezel, P/N 1646175, into the enlarged hole and bend tabs.
6. Reinstall the soft top boot cover to the hinge assembly.
7. Raise the soft top and latch it to the windshield header, but leave the back glass up and locked to the soft top frame.
8. Remove four screws retaining the pull down motor cover and remove cover (refer to Figure 3).
9. Remove the pull down motor assembly (refer to Figure 4).
10. Cut the manual release cable just above the crimp (refer to Figure 4).
11. Mark location of soft/hard top release cable at the set screw and remove the soft/hard top release cable (refer to Figure 4).
12. Reinstall the manual release cable to new soft/hard top pull down motor assembly, P/N 1644990, using electrical connector clip, P/N 1839906.
13. Reinstall soft/hard top release cable to the new so0ft/hard top pull down motor assembly with cable in original position as marked in step 11.
14. Reinstall new soft/hard top pull down motor (refer to Figure 4).
15. Unlatch and lower the soft top back glass assembly until the hook on the soft top frame is just touching the pull down motor jaws. The pull down motor assembly should be adjusted to the point where the jaws touch the middle of the vertical forward section of the hook (refer to Figure 5).
16. Loosen the 10mm bolts that secure the mounting bracket to the pull down motor assembly and pivot the pull down motor assembly forward or rearward (refer to Figure 6).
17. Recheck alignment.
18. If further adjustment is required, remove the pull down motor assembly and install or remove flat washers on the mounting studs as necessary (refer to Figure 4).
19. Install soft/hard top to pull down motor cover, P/N 1646537, (refer to Figure 3).
20. Lower the soft top to its stowed position.
