A permanent magnet motor operates each power window. Each motor raises the window or lowers the window when the supply voltage is received. The direction that the motor turns depends upon the polarity of the supply voltage.

The left front power window switch controls the following components:

    • All of the motors
    • The power window control module

Each window switch controls 1 motor.

Window Regulator Counterbalance Spring Winding:

    • Correct alignment of spring in pivot stud (1).
    • Spring position with glass full up (2).

Left Front Power Window Switch Operation

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, the battery voltage is supplied to the left front power window switch from the PWR WDO/SUN RF circuit breaker.

The battery voltage is supplied to the window motor when any UP switch in the left front power window switch not associated with the express down is operated. The window motor is grounded through the DOWN contact in the left front power window switch. The motor runs in order to close the window. The battery voltage is applied to the window motor in the opposite direction when any DOWN switch in the left front power window switch is operated. The window motor is then grounded through the UP contact in the left front power window switch. The motor runs in order to open the window.

Express Down Window Operation

The express down window function is a convenience feature. This function allows the left front window to be fully opened by holding the left front window switch down for more than 0.3 seconds and then releasing the switch. Press the UP switch or the DOWN switch in order to stop the window at any position.

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, the power window control module receives power at terminal A. The timer and control unit detects when the left front window switch is held down for more than 0.3 seconds and released at the down input terminal. The relay control switch closes, completing the coil circuit through the left UP switch in the left front power window switch to ground. The relay contacts close. The left window motor receives battery voltage. Terminal A of the motor is grounded through the left front power window switch UP contact. When the window is fully open, the motor stall current is detected at the current sensing input of the timer and control unit. The relay control switch opens, de-energizing the coil and disconnecting the power to the motor. The motor also stops 10-30 seconds after the DOWN switch is pushed.

If the left front window UP switch is pushed while operating in the express down mode, the timer and control unit detects this condition at the UP input terminal and opens the relay control switch. Terminal B of the motor is then no longer grounded through the left front power window switch. The window stops moving downward and moves upward if the UP switch is held. If the power input at terminal A of the power window control module is lost, the power window still operates, but without the express down feature.

Window Switch Operation

With the ignition switch in the RUN position, the battery voltage is supplied to the following components though the PWR WDO/SUN RFcircuit breaker:

    • The window switches
    • The window lockout switch

When the UP switch in the power window switch is operated, the battery voltage is supplied to the window motor. The motor is grounded through the DOWN contact in the following components:

    • The window switch
    • The left front power window switch

The motor runs in order to close the window. When the DOWN switch in the power window switch is operated, the battery voltage is supplied to the window motor in the opposite direction. The motor is grounded through the UP contact in the following components:

    • The window switch
    • The left front power window switch

The motor runs in order to open the window.

Each motor is protected by an electronic circuit breaker. If a window switch is held too long with the window obstructed or after the window is fully opened or fully closed, the circuit breaker opens the circuit. The circuit breakers have positive temperature coefficients and reset automatically when the voltage is removed from the motors.
