The theft deterrent system on this vehicle consists of the following 2 separate systems:

    • The personal automotive security system (PASS-Key® II)
    • The content theft deterrent (CTD) system

These systems are described and diagnosed separately within this section.

The PASS-Key® II is designed in order to help prevent vehicle theft. The PASS-Key® II disables the engine unless the driver uses a key with a specific electrical resistance in the ignition switch. The system consists of the following components:

    • The instrument cluster (SECURITY indicator -- Buick)
    • The ignition key
    • The theft deterrent module
    • The park/neutral position (PNP) switch
    • The powertrain control module (PCM)
    • The remote indicator bank (SECURITY indicator -- Oldsmobile)
    • The theft deterrent relay
    • The steering column (ignition) lock cylinder

The content theft deterrent (CTD) system is designed in order to provide a warning in the event of a forced entry. The attempted forced entry may come through either of the following areas:

    • The doors
    • The rear compartment

When a forced entry is attempted, the alarm warning system activates. The warning system causes the following actions to occur:

    • The horns sound intermittently.
    • The exterior lights flash in unison for approximately 3 minutes.

The CTD system consists of the following components:

    • The door jamb switches
    • The door lock cylinder switches
    • The instrument cluster (SECURITY indicator -- Buick)
    • The lamp control module (LCM)
    • The rear compartment lid tamper switch
    • The remote function actuator (RFA) module
    • The remote indicator bank (SECURITY indicator -- Oldsmobile)

The yellow SECURITY indicator in the instrument cluster (Buick) or the remote indicator bank (Oldsmobile) is controlled by both of the following systems:

    •  In the PASS-Key® II system, the theft deterrent module controls the indicator only when the ignition switch is in RUN or START.
    • In the CTD system, the remote function actuator (RFA) module controls the indicator only when the ignition switch is OFF.

If the engine cranks but does not start, the PASS-Key® II system is not causing the problem. The CTD system does not affect the engine starting.

Door Lock Actuator

The CTD system uses the inputs of the front and the rear door lock actuators in order to activate the alarm. The RFA module detects a ground at terminal E10 (CKT 126, TAN) under the following conditions:

  1. The CTD system is armed.
  2. The left front door is open. (The left front door lock actuator switch closes.)

The RFA module detects a ground at terminal E12 CKT 49 (DK BLU) if the front or the rear doors are open. When the RFA module detects a ground condition at either terminal, the CTD system enters the alarm mode.

Door Lock Cylinder Switch

The front door lock cylinders are equipped with switches. The switches are used in order to disarm the CTD system. When you turn the lock cylinder in order to unlock the door, the following actions occur:

    • The door lock cylinder switch closes.
    • The RFA module detects a ground at terminal E11 CKT 262 (LT GRN).

When the RFA detects a ground condition at terminal E11, the CTD system is armed and the system enters delayed mode.

Rear Compartment Lid Tamper Switch

The rear compartment lid tamper switch connects to the rear compartment lid lock cylinder. If the lock cylinder rotates or moves in and out, the following actions occur:

    • The rear compartment lid tamper switch closes.
    • The RFA module detects a ground at terminal F10 CKT 263 (LT BLU/BLK). When the RFA module detects a ground condition at terminal F10, the CTD system enters the alarm mode.

Remote Function Actuator (RFA) Module

The remote function actuator (RFA) module contains the software in order to perform the following tasks for the CTD system:

    • Monitor the inputs.
    • Control the outputs.

The RFA module has the following inputs:

    • The left front door lock actuator CKT 126 (TAN)
    • The right front door and the rear door lock actuators CKT 49 (DK BLU)
    • The door lock cylinder switches CKT 262 (LT GRN)
    • The rear compartment lid tamper switch CKT 263 (LT BLU/BLK)

The RFA module has the following outputs:

    • The horn relay control CKT 28 (BLK/WHT)
    • The exterior lights control enable CKT 624 (BLK/WHT)
    • The SECURITY indicator CKT 264 (DK GRN)
