Steering Wheel Inflator Module Replacement Buick

Removal Procedure

Caution: When performing service on or around SIR components or SIR wiring, follow the procedure to temporarily disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling/Enabing SIR System in Restraints. Failure to follow procedures could result in possible air bag deployment, personal injury or otherwise unneeded SIR repairs.

  1. Disable the SIR System. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.

  2. Object Number: 277314 Size: LH
  3. Remove the steering wheel inserts (10) that cover the mounting screws (8).
  4. Remove the screws (8) from the back of the steering wheel.
  5. Caution: When carrying a live inflator module, make sure bag and trim cover are pointed away from body. Never carry the inflator module by wires or connector on underside of module. In case of an accidental deployment, bag will then deploy with minimal chance of injury. When placing a live inflator module on a bench or other surface, always face the bag and trim cover away from surface. Never rest a steering column on the steering wheel with inflator module face down and column vertical. This is necessary so that a free space is provided to allow air bag to expand in the unlikely event of accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

  6. Remove the inflator module (5). Note the wire routing for assembly reference.
  7. Push down and twist the horn contact lead (4) counterclockwise. Disconnect the horn contact lead (4) from the cam tower.
  8. Remove the horn ground lead (7).
  9. Remove the retainer (CPA) (9) from the inflator module (5).
  10. Disconnect the SIR connector (1) from the inflator module (5).
  11. Disconnect the steering wheel control switch connector (2), if equipped.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 277314 Size: LH
  1. Connect the SIR connector (1) to the inflator module (5).
  2. Install the retainer (CPA) (9) to the inflator module (5).
  3. Route the horn contact lead (4) through the steering wheel and into the cam tower.
  4. Push the lead (4) into the cam tower. Rotate the lead (4) clockwise into locked position.
  5. Install the horn ground lead (7).
  6. Connect the steering wheel control switch connector (6), if equipped.
  7. Important:

       • Install the top surface of the module first in order to ease assembly and fit.
       • Do not pinch any of the wires.

  8. Install the inflator module (5) to the steering wheel.
  9. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  10. Install the screws (8) through the back of the steering wheel to the inflator module (5).
  11. Tighten
Tighten the screws to 3 N·m (27 lb in).

  12. Install the steering wheel inserts (10).
  13. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
