Control Assembly Description Buick
The heater and A/C control
allows the vehicle operator to communicate with the electronic A/C system.
The heater and A/C control includes the following features:
• | A vacuum florescent (VF) information display panel |
Each operating mode contains an light emitting diode (LED) indicator
that illuminates when the operator selects that mode. The rear window defogger
also has a LED indicator.
The heater and A/C control assembly includes a vacuum-fluorescent display.
Temperature Control
The temperature control performs the following functions:
• | When the system is in the OFF mode, the system turns ON in the
AUTO mode when the occupant of the vehicle presses the temperature increase
or decrease button. |
• | When the system is in any mode except OFF, either button performs
one of the following actions: |
- | If the temperature is 19°-29°C (66°-84°F),
pressing the buttons increases/decreases the internal temperature setting
by 1 degree. |
- | If the temperature is 18°C (65°F), pressing the
left button decreases the internal temperature setting to 16°C (60°F). |
- | If the temperature is 30°C (85°F), pressing the
right button increases the internal temperature setting to 32°C (90°F). |
A change is the temperature setting signals the heater and A/C programmer
to bring the passenger compartment temperature to the new setting. This is
done by changing:
• | The air discharge location |
• | The air discharge temperature |
Fan Speed
Use the fan speed dial in order to manually change the fan speed by
turning the dial 1 increment in order to increase/decrease the fan
speed.
If the system is operating under AUTO fan speed control, turning the
dial stops the AUTO fan speed control and begins a manual fan speed control.
The fan speed remains constant, unless the driver changes the fan speed
again.
When the system is in OFF mode, pressing the Mode button causes the
system to turn on AUTO mode with AUTO fan speed control.
Mode Selector
The heater and A/C control has a mode selector for each of the following
operating modes:
If the driver presses AUTO, the following actions occur:
• | The heater and A/C programmer tests the internal temperature selected
by the operator and the information provided by the system's network of sensors. |
• | The heater and A/C programmer then initiates the appropriate air
intake point, air discharge points and activates/deactivates the A/C compressor |
Vacuum Fluorescent (VF) Information Display Panel
The vacuum fluorescent (VF) panel provides system operating information
for the driver. A 3-digit temperature readout is located near the center of
the display. With the system in OFF mode, the outside temperature is
displayed continuously.
The driver may display the current temperature setting by selecting
any mode except OFF or adjusting the temperature control.
Adjusting the inside temperature will display the current temperature
setting display for 5 seconds. The display then returns to the outside
temperature.

Heater and A/C Components
The heater and A/C control
allows the vehicle operator to communicate with the electronic A/C system.
The heater and A/C control contains the following components:
• | Soft-touch buttons, in order to select operating modes |
• | A fan speed increase/decrease switch |
• | An English/Metric display switch |
• | A rear defog control switch |
• | A vacuum fluorescent display panel |
When the parklamps or the headlamps are turned ON, the following components
are illuminated:
Mode Selector Buttons
The Oldsmobile heater and A/C control has a selector for the following
operating modes:
If the driver presses AUTO, the following actions occur:
• | The heater and A/C programmer tests the internal temperature selected
by the operator and the information provided by the system's network of sensors. |
• | The heater and A/C programmer then initiates the appropriate air
intake point, air discharge points and activates/deactivates the A/C compressor. |
Temperature Button
The temperature control performs the following functions:
• | When the system is in the OFF mode, the system turns ON in the
AUTO mode when the occupant of the vehicle presses the temperature UP or DOWN
button. |
• | When the system is in any mode except OFF, either button performs
one of the following actions: |
- | If the temperature is 19°-29°C (66°-84°F),
pressing WARM/COOL buttons increases/decreases the internal temperature setting
by 1°. |
- | If the temperature is 18°C (65°F), pressing the
COOL button decreases the internal temperature setting to 16°C (60°F). |
- | If the temperature is 30°C (85°F), pressing the
WARM button increases the internal temperature setting to 32°C (90°F). |
A change in the temperature setting signals the heater and A/C programmer
to bring the passenger compartment temperature to the new setting. This is
done by changing:
• | The air discharge location |
• | The air discharge temperature |
Fan Speed Increase/Decrease
The Oldsmobile fan speed control knob is a rotary switch without mechanical
stops. In the manual fan speed mode, there are 9 speed settings. Select
the setting by rotating the knob in one of the following directions:
The corresponding light emitting diode (LED) illuminates in relationship
to the blower speed. By pressing the fan speed control knob, the fan will
operate in the AUTO mode. In the AUTO mode, the programmer selects
the appropriate blower speed.
If the system is operating under the AUTO fan speed control, the fan
speed knob causes the following actions to occur:
• | The AUTO fan speed control stops. |
• | The manual fan speed control begins. |
The fan speed remains constant, unless the increase/decrease switch
is rotated again.
Vacuum Fluorescent (VF) Information Display Panel
The vacuum fluorescent (VF) panel provides system operating information
for the driver.
The Oldsmobile display panels are equipped with a 3 digit temperature
display. The following letters appear on the display:
°C and °F also appear on the display. The °C
is illuminated when metric units are requested. The °F is illuminated
for temperature display in English units. The following words appear
on the display:
With the blower operating in the manual mode, at least 1 light
emitting diode (LED) will be illuminated. As the blower control knob is turned
clockwise, the following actions occur:
• | More LEDs will illuminate. |
• | The blower speed increases. |
As the blower control knob is turned counterclockwise, the following
actions occur:
• | The LEDs will extinguish. |
• | The blower speed decreases. |
The manual mode consists of 9 blower speeds.
No indicators are illuminated if the following conditions exist:
• | When either system is operating in the AUTO mode. |
• | The fan speed control is set to AUTO. |
Instead, the word AUTO illuminates. When the system is turned OFF, the
fan speed display area is blank.
