Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement Oldsmobile

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 39500 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling and Recharging (ACR4) System

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  3. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right wheelhouse liner. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the lower air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement In Body Front End.
  6. Disconnect the electrical connectors.

  8. Remove the A/C compressor hose from the compressor.

  9. Object Number: 264791  Size: SH
  10. Remove the front compressor mounting bolts.
  11. Remove the rear bracket to engine block bolt.
  12. Remove the compressor.

  13. Object Number: 304929  Size: SH
  14. Remove the rear mounting bracket.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 39400 Electronic Halogen Leak Detector

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.


    Object Number: 304929  Size: SH
  1. Install the rear compressor mounting bracket and the bolts.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the rear bolts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  3. Install the compressor, the mounting bolts, and the nut.
  4. Tighten

        • Tighten the front bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
        • Tighten the rear mounting nut to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the A/C compressor hose to the compressor.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  7. Connect the electrical connectors to the compressor.
  8. Lower the vehicle.
  9. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  10. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  11. Using the J 39400 , leak test the A/C system. Refer to Leak Testing .
  12. Install the right wheelhouse liner. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  13. Install the lower air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement in Body Front End.

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 39500 Air Conditioning Refrigerant Recovery, Recycling and Recharging (ACR4) System

  1. Recover the refrigerant from the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right wheelhouse liner. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Remove the lower air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement .

  7. Disconnect the electrical connector from the compressor.
  8. Disconnect the electrical connector from the A/C pressure switch.

  9. Object Number: 264817  Size: SH
  10. Remove the A/C compressor hose from the compressor.

  11. Object Number: 264796  Size: SH
  12. Remove the front compressor from the mounting nuts.
  13. Remove the bolt from the rear of the compressor.
  14. Remove the compressor.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    Object Number: 264796  Size: SH
  1. Install the compressor.
  2. Install the front compressor mounting nuts.
  3. Tighten
    Tighten the compressor mounting nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  4. Install the bolt to the rear of the compressor.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the compressor mounting bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the A/C compressor hose to the compressor.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  8. Connect the electrical connections to the compressor.
  9. Connect the electrical connection to the A/C pressure switch.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
  11. Install the accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  12. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  13. Using the J 39400 , leak test the A/C system. Refer to Leak Testing .
  14. Install the right wheelhouse liner. Refer to Wheelhouse Panel Replacement in Body Front End.
  15. Install the lower air deflector. Refer to Front Air Deflector Replacement .
