Removal Procedure
Tools Required
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
in General Information.
- Remove the air intake duct.
- Remove the cruise control cable at the throttle body.
- Remove the following from the shift control linkage:
• | Mounting bracket at the transmission |
• | Lever at the manual shaft |
- Remove the modulator vacuum line.
- Remove the following wiring connectors:
• | Transmission park/neutral position switch |
• | Transmission electrical connector |
- Remove the exhaust crossover pipe. Refer to Crossover Exhaust
Pipe in Exhaust System.
- Remove the heater hose retainer bracket.
- Remove the oxygen sensor connector.
- Remove the 3 top transmission-to-engine
bolts.
Caution: Provide additional support when a vehicle is on a hoist:
• | Before removing parts, support the opposite end. This helps prevent
the vehicle from slipping off. |
• | Before removing major components, chain the vehicle frame to the
hoist pads at the same end as the removal. This helps avoid a tip-off. |
Failure to follow these precautions could cause vehicle damage, serious
personal injury, or death.
Important: Load the support fixture by tightening the wing-nuts several turns in
order to relieve tension on the frame and mounts.
- Install the J 28467-360
.
- Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle. Refer to General Vehicle
Lifting and Jacking in General Information.
- Remove both front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Wheel Removal
in Tires and Wheels.
- Remove the left steering gear retaining bolts.
- Remove the left front splash shield.
- Remove the right and left front ball joint nuts. Refer to Ball
Joint in Front Suspension.
- Separate the right and left control arms from the steering knuckle.
Refer to Control Arm in Front Suspension.
- Remove the front lower air deflector.
- Remove the power steering line retaining brackets at the frame.
- Remove the right side steering gear throughbolt.
- Support the frame with a jack.
- Remove the left and right transmission mount throughbolts.
- Remove the frame assembly.
- Remove the flywheel cover.
Important: Mark the flywheel-to-converter relationship in order to ensure proper
reassembly.
- Remove the flywheel-to-converter bolts.
- Remove the electrical connectors at the starter.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to Starter Replacement in Cranking
Systems.
- Disconnect the electrical connector at the speed sensor. Refer
to Vehicle Speed Sensor Replacement
.
Important: Carefully guide the output shaft past the lip seal. Do not allow the
shaft splines to contact any portion of the lip seal surface. This helps prevent
damage to the seal.
- Remove the left and right drive axles from the transmission. Refer to
Drive Axle in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service.
- Support the transmission with a jackstand. Adjust as needed during
the procedure.

Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 37292-B Tear-Away
Axle Seal
Protector
In order to complete the installation, observe the following assembly
tips and reverse the removal procedure.
Assembly Tips
Use care when installing the right side drive axle into the transmission
case. The splined shaft can easily damage the seal.
Important:
• | Before installing the right side drive axle, be sure to install
the J 37292-B
. Refer to
Drive Axle
in Drive Axle On-Vehicle Service. |
• | Line up the flywheel to torque converter marks made at disassembly. |
• | Torque converter to flywheel bolts should always be tightened
twice. The final torque should be 62 N·m (46 lb ft). |
• | Check the adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed. |
• | After installing the front wheel and tire assemblies, torque the
wheel nuts to specifications. Refer to Wheel Installation in Tires and Wheels. |
• | Check and adjust the fluid level as needed |
• | Road test and check for leaks. |
• | When installing the transmission to engine block brace, tighten
the brace to engine bolts first and the brace to transmission case last in
order to avoid pulling the transmission case out of line. |
