Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the hood. Refer to Body Front End.
  2. Disconnect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  4. Drain the engine oil.
  5. Remove the fuel injector sight shield (VIN K). Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  6. Remove the fuel injector sight shield (VIN 1). Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  7. Remove the air cleaner duct. Refer to Engine Controls.
  8. Important: Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to Engine Controls.

  9. Disconnect the fuel lines from the rail and the mounting bracket. Lay the fuel lines aside. Refer to Engine Controls.
  10. Disconnect the throttle and cruise cables with the mounting bracket from the throttle body. Refer to Engine Controls.
  11. Remove the engine mount struts from the engine mount strut brackets. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  12. Remove the engine mount strut brackets from the upper radiator support. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  13. Remove the engine cooling fans. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  14. Remove the vacuum line to the transaxle vacuum modulator (VIN K). Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  15. Remove the vacuum booster hose from the engine. Refer to Vacuum Booster System.
  16. Remove the power steering pump from the engine. Lay the power steering pump aside. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  17. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine. Lay the A/C compressor aside. Secure the compressor to the frame. Refer to HVAC.
  18. Remove the electrical connections from the engine. Refer to Engine Controls.
  19. Remove the upper radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  20. Remove the lower radiator hose from the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  21. Remove the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to HVAC.
  22. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  23. Remove the flywheel cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  24. Remove the starter motor. Refer to Cranking System.
  25. Scribe the torque converter to the flywheel for installation.
  26. Remove the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  27. Remove the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service
  28. Remove the engine mount to frame nuts. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  29. Remove the three way catalytic converter pipe from the manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
  30. Remove the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  31. Lower the vehicle.
  32. Remove the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  33. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the engine. Align the engine with the engine to transaxle dowel pins.
  2. Install the upper transaxle-to-engine bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  3. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  4. Install the lower transaxle-to-engine bolts. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  5. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to General Information.
  6. Install the three way catalytic converter pipe to the manifold. Refer to Exhaust System.
  7. Install the engine mount nuts to the frame. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  8. Install the transaxle brace. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  9. Install the flywheel-to-torque converter bolts. Align the scribe marks. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  10. Install the starter motor. Refer to Cranking System.
  11. Install the flywheel cover. Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Refer to HVAC.
  14. Connect the lower radiator hose to the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  15. Connect the upper radiator hose to the engine. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  16. Install the electrical connections to the engine. Refer to Engine Controls.
  17. Install the A/C compressor to the engine. Refer to HVAC.
  18. Install the power steering pump. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  19. Install the vacuum booster hose to the engine. Refer to Vacuum Booster System.
  20. Install the vacuum line to the transaxle vacuum modulator (VIN K). Refer to Automatic Transaxle On-Vehicle Service.
  21. Install the engine cooling fans. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  22. Install the engine mount strut brackets to the upper radiator support. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Bracket Replacement .
  23. Install the engine mount struts to the engine mount struts brackets. Refer to Engine Mount Strut Replacement .
  24. Connect the throttle and cruise cables with the mounting bracket to the throttle body. Refer to Engine Controls.
  25. Connect the fuel lines to the rail and the mounting bracket. Refer to Engine Controls.
  26. Install the air cleaner duct. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  27. Install the fuel injector sight shield (VIN 1). Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  28. Install the fuel injector sight shield (VIN K). Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  29. Connect the battery ground (negative) cable. Refer to Battery.
  30. Install the hood. Refer to Body Front End.
  31. Fill the cooling system with coolant. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  32. Fill the engine with oil. Refer to Maintenance and Lubrication.
  33. Inspect all of the fluid levels.
  34. Inspect for leaks.
