J 37043 Parking Brake Cable Release Tool

Removal Procedure

The automatic adjustment park brake pedal assembly and the front park brake cable are serviced as a unit. The front park brake cable has no threads and is not adjustable.

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 492729  Size: SH
  3. Pull down on the intermediate park brake cable near the park brake connector (2).
  4. Remove the front park brake cable (3) from the cable connector (1).
  5. Using J 37043 remove the park brake cable housing from the cable retaining bracket.
  6. Lower the vehicle.
  7. Remove left sound insulator panel to access the park brake lever assembly. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
  8. Remove the left front sill plate. Refer to Front Carpet Retainer Replacement in Interior Trim.
  9. Pull the carpet back in order to expose park brake cable.

  11. Disconnect the electrical connector from the park brake warning lamp switch.

  12. Object Number: 107329  Size: SH
  13. Remove the park brake lever assembly attaching nuts (1, 2).
  14. Remove the park brake lever and cable assembly from the vehicle.
  15. Remove the park brake warning light switch. Refer to Parking Brake Indicator Switch Replacement .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the park brake warning light switch. Refer to Parking Brake Indicator Switch Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 107329  Size: SH
  3. Install the park brake lever and cable assembly to the mounting studs.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the park brake lever assembly attaching nuts (1, 2).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the park brake lever nuts to 24 N·m (18 lb ft).

  7. Connect the electrical connector to the park brake warning lamp switch.
  8. Install the carpet.

  10. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Connect the front park brake cable (3) to the park brake cable connector (1).
  12. Lower the vehicle.

  14. If a new park brake pedal assembly is being installed the cable tension set pin has to be removed.
  15. To set the park brake cable tension rotate the tension release pin (1) 80 degrees and then pull down to remove.
  16. Apply the park brake pedal 3 full cycles to complete the tension set.
  17. Install the left front sill plate. Refer to Front Carpet Retainer Replacement in Interior Trim.
  18. Install the left sound insulator panel. Refer to Instrument Panel Insulator Panel Replacement - Left Side in Instrument Panel, Gages, and Console.
