Removal Procedure

    Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
    In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System in SIR.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  4. Remove the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  5. Remove the IP trim panel lower. Refer to Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.

  7. Remove the tilt lever.

  9. Remove the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws.
  10. Remove the lower steering column trim cover from the closeout shroud.

  11. Object Number: 419647  Size: SH
  12. Remove the upper steering column trim cover retaining screw (3).

  13. Object Number: 375310  Size: SH
  14. Lift the upper steering column trim cover to gain access to the lock cylinder access hole.
  15. Using a bent tip awl, insert the tip into the ignition lock cylinder access hole.

  16. Object Number: 375316  Size: SH
  17. Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the START position.
  18. Using the bent tip awl push down on the ignition lock cylinder retaining pin.
  19. Release the ignition lock cylinder to the RUN position and remove the lock cylinder.
  20. Remove the upper trim cover.
  21. Disconnect the closeout shroud from the upper steering column trim cover.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 419647  Size: SH
  1. Connect the closeout shroud to the upper steering column trim cover.
  2. Install the upper steering column trim cover to the steering column.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the upper steering column trim cover retaining screw (3).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the upper steering column trim cover retaining screw to 1.5 N·m (13 lb in).

  6. Install the ignition lock cylinder.

  8. Install the lower steering column trim cover to the closeout shroud.
  9. Install the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the lower steering column trim cover retaining screws to 3.5 N·m (31 lb in).

  11. Install the tilt lever.
  12. Install the IP trim panel lower. Refer to Instrument Panel Lower Trim Panel Replacement in Instrument Panel, Gauges, and Console.
  13. Install the steering wheel. Refer to Steering Wheel Replacement .
  14. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
  15. Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System in SIR.
