J 24319-B Puller

1. Loosen the left power steering gear mounting bolts (accessed through the engine compartment.
2. Raise the vehicle using a suspension contact hoist. Support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
3. Remove both front tires and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
4. Remove the catalytic convertor to the front exhaust pipe retaining nuts.
5. Separate the exhaust pipe flange from the catalytic convertor.
6. Remove the gasket from the catalytic convertor.

Caution: Failure to disconnect the intermediate shaft from the rack and pinion stub shaft can result in damage to the steering gear and/or intermediate shaft. This damage can cause loss of steering control which could result in personal injury.

Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.




7. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
8. Disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering gear.



9. Remove the tie rod end cotter pins.
10. Remove the tie rod end retaining nuts.



11. separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckle. Refer toSeparating Tie Rod from Stering Knuckle



12. Unsnap and remove the power steering heat shield.
13. Disconnect the Magnasteer® electrical connector from the steering gear.



14. Remove the power steering inlet and outlet hoses (1,2) from the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement



15. Remove the left power steering gear mounting bolts. (lift from the mounting holes).
16. Remove the right power steering gear mounting bolt.
17. Support the rear of the transmission.
18. Remove the rear transmission mount retaining bolts.
19. Lower the rear of the transmission, Remove the support from the rear of the transmission.

1. Install the steering gear through the right wheel opening.
2. Raise the rear of the frame.
3. Install the frame bolts. Refer to Frame in Body Front End.
4. Remove the suitable engine support from under the rear of the engine cradle.
5. Raise and support the rear of the transmission.
6. Install the rear transmission mount retaining bolts.
7. Remove and lower the transmission support.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

8. Install the three steering gear mounting bolts.

Tighten
Tighten the bolts in the sequence shown to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).




9. Install the power steering hoses (1,2) to the power steering gear. Refer to Power Steering Hoses Replacement



10. Install the power steering heat shield.



11. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.

Important: Do not back off the nut for insertion of the cotter pin.

Tighten
Tighten the tie rod nuts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

12. Install the tie rod nuts cotter pins.
13. Connect the intermediate shaft to the steering gear.

Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

14. Install the gasket to the catalytic converter to the front exhaust pipe flange.
15. Install the catalytic convertor to the front exhaust flange.
16. Install tire and wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
17. Lower the vehicle.
18. Fill and bleed the power steering reservoir. Refer to
19. Inspect the power steering system for leaks.
20. Perform a wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications
