J 42640 Centering Sphere Installer Tool

Important: Once the steering column support assembly has been staked more than three times, it must be replaced.

1. Install the steering column support assembly (1) to the steering column jacket assembly (3).

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

2. Install 4 torx screws (2).

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).




3. Install the centering sphere (1) and the joint preload spring (2) with J 42640 . Lubricate the centering sphere (1) with lithium grease.



4. Compress the centering sphere and joint preload spring. Rotate the driver 90 degrees in the clockwise direction until the arms lock in place.



5. Install the race and upper shaft assembly to J 42640 . Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees.



6. Remove the race and upper shaft assembly with J 42640 . Rotate the race and upper shaft assembly 90 degrees from J 42640 and remove with the centering sphere.



7. Apply lithium grease to the race and upper shaft assembly (1).
8. Install the lower shaft assembly  (2) to the upper shaft assembly using the lines marked on the shafts as a guide.



9. Install the steering shaft assembly (2) into the steering column tilt head assembly (1).



10. Install the steering column tilt head assembly (1) to the steering column jacket assembly (4).
11. Stake the pivot pin locations (2).
12. Install 2 pivot pins (3).



13. Install the adapter and bearing assembly (1).
14. Install the lower bearing seat (2).
15. Install the lower bearing spring (3).
16. Install the lower spring retainer (4).
17. Install the sensor retainer (5).
18. Install the steering shaft seal (6).



19. Install 3 flat head 6-lobed socket tapping screws
20. Install the linear shift assembly.

The linear shift assembly must be out of the park position to install the lower socket tapping screw.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).




21. Install the electrical BTSI actuator.



22. Adjust the electrical BTSI actuator.

22.1.

Install the shift lever if not present.

22.2.

Pull the tab (1) out on the block side (2) of the electrical BTSI actuator.

22.3.

Shift the column into the neutral position.

22.4.

Press on the adjuster block (2) to compress the internal adjuster spring to disengage the adjuster teeth. Slide the adjuster block (2) as far away from the solenoid as possible.

22.5.

Shift into the park position.

22.6.

Lock in place by pushing the tab (2) back in.

23. Inspect the electrical BTSI actuator.

23.1.

The electrical BTSI actuator must lock the gear shift lever when it is put into the park position.

23.2.

When the column is installed in the vehicle you will not be able to shift the gear shift lever out of the park position without pressing on the brake pedal. The solenoid will be energized.

23.3.

Readjust if needed.




24. Install the turn signal and multifunction switch assembly.
25. Install the 2 pan head tapping screws.

Tighten
Tighten the screws to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

26. Install the tilt spring. Refer to Tilt Spring - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
27. Install the lock module assembly. Refer to Electronic Column Lock Module - Assemble - Off Vehicle .
