Removal Procedure

Tools Required

    • J 28467-B Universal Engine Support Fixture
    • J 28467-380 Engine Support Bracket
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly . Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  3. Disconnect the transaxle electrical connector.
  4. Disconnect shift control cable bracket with cable attached.

  6. Remove the top transaxle case bolts.
  7. Remove the top bolt from rear transaxle mount.
  8. Disconnect the oxygen sensor connector.
  9. Remove the engine frame. Refer to Engine Frame in Frame and Underbody.

  10. Object Number: 166594  Size: SH
  11. Remove the flywheel to torque converter bolts. Mark the flywheel to converter relationship to ensure proper reassembly. Refer to Flywheel to Torque Converter Bolt Replacement .

  12. Object Number: 464391  Size: SH
  13. Disconnect Input speed sensor electrical connectors.
  14. Remove the engine to transaxle bracket.

  15. Object Number: 166580  Size: SH
  16. Remove the transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to Transmission Fluid Filler Tube Replacement

  17. Object Number: 166590  Size: SH
  18. Remove the rear engine mount.

  19. Object Number: 464391  Size: SH
  20. Remove the remaining transaxle to engine bolts.
  21. Remove the transaxle from vehicle.
  22. Flush the transmission cooler and lines. Refer to Transmission Fluid Cooler Flushing and Flow Test .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 160965  Size: SH
  1. Install the transaxle into the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 166598  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the transaxle to engine bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle bolts to 75 N·m (55 lb ft).

  5. Install the rear engine mount.

  6. Object Number: 166580  Size: SH
  7. Install the transaxle fluid filler tube. Refer to Transmission Fluid Filler Tube Replacement .
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the filler tube bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  9. Install the transaxle brace to engine.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the transaxle brace to engine bolts to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).

  11. Connect the input speed sensor electrical connectors.

  12. Object Number: 166594  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Align the mark made on the torque converter with the mark made on the flywheel made in the disassembly.
       • Tighten all the torque converter to flywheel bolts twice.

  13. Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the flywheel to torque converter bolts to 62 N·m (46 lb ft).

  15. Install the torque converter cover.
  16. Install the engine frame. Refer to Engine Frame in Frame and Underbody.
  17. Connect to oxygen sensor connector.
  18. Install the left side steering rack mount bolts.
  19. Tighten
    Tighten the steering rack mount bolts to 65 N·m (48 lb ft).

  20. Install the top bolt of the rear transaxle mount.
  21. Tighten
    Tighten the rear transaxle bolt to 58 N·m (42 lb ft).

  22. Connect the shift control cable and the shift control cable bracket.
  23. Check adjustment of the shift cables. Re-adjust as needed.
  24. Connect the transaxle electrical connector.
  25. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  26. Connect the negative battery cable.
  27. Check and adjust the transaxle fluid level. Refer to Transmission Fluid Check
  28. Road test the vehicle and check for transaxle leaks.
