Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 28467-380 Engine
Lift Hook.
- Remove the hood. Refer to Hood in Body Front End.
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
- Disconnect
the negative battery cable.
Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to
Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement
.
- Depressurize the fuel lines. Refer to
Fuel Pressure Relief
in Engine Controls.
- Drain the coolant. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
in Engine Cooling
- Drain the engine oil.
- Remove the radiator hoses.
- Remove the inlet heater supply hose. Refer to
Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement
. Outlet heater supply hose.

- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Remove the power steering pump. Set the pump aside. Refer to
Power Steering Pump Replacement
in Power Steering
Systems.
- Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor.
- Remove the air flow duct.
- Remove the throttle cable from the throttle linkage.
- Disconnect the battery wire from the generator.
- Remove the fuel feed and return lines from the fuel rail and the
pressure regulator.
Remove the brake booster from the engine vacuum connections.
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
Vehicle Lifting in General Information.
- Remove the exhaust pipe from the right manifold. Refer to Exhaust
Pipe in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove the wiring harness connectors from the following locations:
• | The throttle position sensor |
• | The idle air control valve |
• | The oil pressure switch |
• | The power steering cutout switch |
• | The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) |
• | The low oil level sensor |
- Remove the A/C compressor from the engine. Tie the compressor
back away from the engine.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
- Remove the flywheel cover.
- Remove the starter motor. Refer to
Starter Motor Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Automatic
Transmission.
- Remove the right front tire and wheel.
- Remove the right engine splash shield.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
.
- Remove the engine to transmission brackets.
- Remove the right lower transmission to engine bolts.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the generator rear brace. Refer to
Generator Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Disconnect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
- Remove the cruise control stepper motor from the cowl and set
aside. Refer to Cruise Control Stepper Motor in Cruise Control.
- Attach J-28467-380 Engine lift Hook.
- Raise the engine slightly to take weight off the mounts.
- Remove the engine mount. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the engine mount bracket.
- Remove the drive belt and the supercharger belt (if equipped)
- Remove the four engine to transmission bolts.
- Remove the engine from the vehicle.
Installation Procedure
- Lower the engine.
- Install the four engine to transmission bolts.
- Install the drive belt and the supercharger belt (if equipped)
- Install the engine mount bracket.
- Install the engine mount. Refer to
Engine Mount Replacement
.
- Remove the Engine Lift Hook J-28467-380.
- Install the cruise control stepper motor to the cowl and set aside.

- Connect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
- Install the generator rear brace. Refer to
Generator Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
Vehicle Lifting
in General Information.
- Install the right lower transmission to engine bolt.
- Install the engine to transmission bracket.
- Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement
.
- Install the right engine splash shield.
- Install the right front tire and the wheel. Refer
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tire and Wheel.
- Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Automatic
Transmission.
- Install the starter motor. Refer to
Starter Motor Replacement
in Engine Electrical.
- Install the flywheel inspection cover.
- Connect the negative battery cable to the engine block.
- Install the A/C compressor to the engine. Refer to A/C Compressor
in Air Conditioning Compressor Service Unit Repair.
- Install the wiring harness connectors to the following locations:
• | The throttle position sensor |
• | The idle air control valve |
• | The oil pressure switch |
• | The power steering cutout switch |
• | The vehicle speed sensor (VSS) |
• | The low oil level sensor |
- Install the front engine splash shield.
- Connect the exhaust to the right exhaust manifold.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the engine.
- Connect the fuel feed and return lines to the fuel rail and the
pressure regulator.
- Connect the battery wire to the generator.
- Connect the throttle cable and the cruise control cable to the
throttle body.
- Install the air flow duct.
- Connect the air temperature sensor electrical connection.
- Install the power steering pump to the engine.
- Install the drive belt and supercharger belt (if equipped) VIN

- Connect the heater hoses to the engine.
- Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.
- Fill the crankcase with oil.
- Fill the cooling system. Refer to
Cooling System Draining and Filling
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to
Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement
.
- Connect the negative battery cable.
- Install the hood. Refer to Hood in Body Front End.
