Cellular Telephone Operation Basic Phone Operations

    • Press the PWR key for at least one second until the phone handset display is illuminated, to turn the phone ON.
    • Press the PWR key for at least one second until the phone handset display is dark, to turn the phone OFF.
    • Enter the number on the keypad and press the SND key to place a call.
    • Press the END key to end a call.
    • The phone must be ON to receive a call. Press SND when the phone rings or press any other handset key other than the volume key or PWR key when the phone rings.
    • There are 33 features in the function menu along with personalization of phone directories that can be modified by the owner.
    • Numbers can be prestored under a specified voice name tag for later ease of use with future phone operation.

Cellular Telephone Operation Message Display

Message Display provides a visual indication of telephone numbers and messages associated with mobile telephone service.

No Service Indicator (NOSVC): The No Service Indicator illuminates when the unit is out of the range of the cellular system or when the selected system registration restricts operation in the service area. Calls cannot be placed or received. The NOSVC flashes slowly in areas of marginal coverage.

Roam Indicator: The Roam Indicator illuminates solid when the unit is within the range of a cellular system other than its home registered range operating on the same frequency. The flashing ON/OFF indicates the operation with alternate service provider from the home system.

In Use Indicator: The In Use Indicator illuminates when a call is initiated or answered. There are no dial tones on cellular phones.

Signal Strength Indicator: The Signal Strength Indicator is represented by 3 full blocks that represents the strength of the cellular signal. The indicator is shown after the Phone menu logo on the DIC display and in the upper left corner of the handset. Three full blocks represent a very strong signal strength. As signal strength decreases, the blocks will go down accordingly.

Digital: The Digital indicates service from a digital cellular service provider.

Voice Recognition (VR): The Voice Recognition on the DIC indicates that the phone is in voice recognition mode.

Cellular Telephone Operation Keypad Buttons

Clear Key (CLR): 
Object Number: 255626  Size: MH
Press CLR to clear the entered number in the event of an error. This does not affect the stored numbers in memory.

Send (SND): 
Object Number: 255628  Size: MH
Press SND to initiate a call to the entered telephone number or to answer an incoming call.

End: Press END to terminate a call. This will also end the memory stroll mode.

Power Key (PWR): Press PWR until you hear a tone to turn the phone ON. Press PWR until a tone is heard again to turn the phone OFF.

Store Key (STO): Press STO and the location number (01-99) to store telephone numbers into any of the 100 memory locations. It can also be used to confirm personalized locations.

Recall Key (RCL): Press RCL and the location number (1 - 99) to recall and display telephone numbers stored in the memory.

Numeric Pad (0 - 9,*,#): Press 0 - 9,*,# to enter the telephone numbers. Enter numbers prior to initiating a call.

Function Key (FCN): Press FCN to activate the following features of the mobile telephone:

    • Volume
    • In Service Use
    • Current Time Usage
    • Telephone Personalization
Voice Recognition: Press VR to allow entry into the voice recognition mode.

M1: Press M1 for one touch dialing. A number can be stored in this location and dialed directly.

Volume Control: The Volume Control adjusts audio from the following phone components:

    • The Keypad
    • The Speaker
    • The Earpiece
    • Volume Control is also used to scroll through the memory and feature menu.

Cellular Telephone Operation Steering Wheel Controls

Phone Paddle: Press Phone-Up In order to transition the phone from the ON state to the ACTIVE state. Hold the phone-up control for one second or greater transitions the phone from the ON state to the ACTIVE state. This also activates the voice recognition mode.

Recall Paddle: Press Recall-Down in order to scroll through the last 5 numbers dialed.

Send Paddle: Press Send-Up in order to dial a telephone number.

End Paddle: Press End-Down in order to end a call.

Select Paddle: Press Select Up/Down in order to scroll through the stored numbers in the memory.

Volume Paddle: Press Volume Up/Down in order to adjust the volume up or down.

Cellular Telephone Operation Feature Descriptions

Analog: The Analog can be turned ON or OFF. Turning it ON prevents the phone from operating on a digital cellular phone channel. Fax transmissions can only be sent on analog channels.

Auto Answer: The Auto Answer can be turned ON or OFF. Turning it ON will automatically answer a call after two initial rings. Air time charges will occur if the phone is left on and unattended with this feature ON.

AutoLock: When the AutoLock is active, the 4-digit Unlock code is required before a phone call can be made or answered. Each time the phone is turned ON, it will be in the Locked mode. A 911 emergency call can still be made when the phone is locked.

Automatic Redial: The Automatic Redial can be turned ON or OFF. This feature can redial a number if the cellular system is busy. The phone will retry the number up to 5 times in 15 second intervals. The auto redial can be cancelled for the current number without entering the menu by pushing any key except the PWR key.

Battery (Portable Only): A battery pack comes with each phone for portable phone use.

CC Status: Activating hidden will hide any sensitive numbers that you may have previously embedded.

Factory Defaults: The Factory Defaults control erases all preset functions. All settings will return to factory presets. If this feature is used, all settings must be reset to desired settings.

Directories: This function selects Directory 1, Directory 2 or Secret. After pressing STO, the phone returns to the normal menu. If the Directory names were changed, the assigned names will be displayed. The secret name cannot be changed.

Directory Names: The directory names feature allows the entry of a 12 character name for each directory. The secret directory cannot be given a special name.

Secret Directory: Numbers stored in the secret directory will not be displayed when it is recalled from memory if Hidden is also selected. Refer to Secret Memory.

Escalating Ring: The escalating ring can be turned ON or OFF. The ringer volume will progressively increase with each subsequent ring with this option.

Key Tones: Key Tones can be set for LONG, SHORT or OFF:

    • The LONG setting will cause a tone to be emitted as long as the button on the keypad is depressed.
    • The SHORT setting causes a short burst to be emitted regardless of how long the button on the keypad is depressed.
    • The OFF setting disables the tones from being heard at all.
Lock Now: The phone locks immediately when the Lock Now feature is set. This prevents unauthorized use. After it has been locked, use the 4-digit code to unlock. The phone will remain unlocked until the phone is locked again.

Minute Alert: When the minute alert is activated, the minute timer will sound a tone that can only be heard on the phone users end, 50 seconds after every minute.

Microphone Mute: The microphone mute can be turned ON or OFF. Activating this option turns OFF the microphone so the person you are talking to cannot hear your voice. This allows for private conversation. Repeat the toggle procedure to turn back ON.

NAM (Number Assignment Module): The number assignment module allows the review of your own phone number. The current number will briefly be displayed at the initial phone power-up. Press the CLR key to exit without making any changes. This phone can be programmed for 4 phone numbers at one time.

Pause: The pause allows numbers to be strung together and separated by a pause.

Privacy: The privacy feature can be turned ON or OFF. The privacy feature is an encryption that scrambles your voice transmission so no one can eavesdrop on your conversation from another source.

Restrictions: The following is a list of seven levels of call restrictions:

    • The No Restrictions function places no restrictions on incoming/outgoing calls.
    • The No Operator Assisted Calls function will not accept calls that require assistance.
    • The Local Calls Only function only allows calls with 7 digits and calls that do not begin with 0.
    • The Domestic Calls Only function only allows calls that are 11 digits long and calls that do not begin with 0. This includes US and Canada calls only.
    • The Memory Lock function retrieves phone numbers that have been stored into memory.
    • The Incoming Only function will not originate any calls except 911 calls. The phone still receives all incoming calls.
    • The Place Calls Only function will not accept any incoming calls.
Ringer: The ringer can be turned ON or OFF. When turned OFF, this option disables the call ringer.

Roam Receive: The Roam Receive function can be turned ON or OFF. When turned ON, this feature allows the option to deny calls while roaming. Some cellular services do not support this function.

Secret: Numbers stored in the secret directory remain hidden as long as hidden is activated.

Service Alert: The Service Alert function can be turned ON or OFF. When turned ON, the phone will sound a tone to alert the user that they have left their home service area and that they are now roaming.

System: Following are the 5 selections for system choice:

    • In the Home Only system, the phone only operates when used in the cellular service it was originally registered.
    • In the A Only system, the phone only operates when it uses the A side of the system.
    • In the B Only system, the phone only operates when it uses the B side of the system.
    • In the A then B system, the phone attempts to use the A side. If not available, it will switch to the B side.
    • In the B then A system, the phone will attempt to use the B side. If not available, it will switch to the A side.
System ID: System ID will display the system id number that you are currently using until CLR is pressed or a different function is used. This is also known as SID.

Timers: Timers will display the time of the last call on the bottom of the display, when the last call is selected. When the cumulative is selected, the total time for all calls since the timer was cleared will be displayed. To reset the timer, press XXX while the timer is displayed. Timers are close approximations only. Timers may not reflect actual elapsed time on a bill.

User ID: User ID allows the entry of a 12-character alphanumeric tag to personalize each directory by using the User Select command.

User Select: The User Select command selects the USER1 or USER2 directory. The user cannot be changed during a call. All settings are independent of each other for USER1 and USER2.

Volume: The following features can be set separately through the volume feature:

    • The Ringer
    • The Key Tones
    • The Earpiece
    • The Handsfree Speaker Volume
        While in conversation, the S key increases the called party's voice volume and the T key decreases the volume. With incoming calls, the S and T keys increase or decrease the ringer volume. To change the volume of more than one function, repeat the process.

Cellular Telephone Operation Telephone Dialing Methods

Placing a Call Through the Handset Keypad

In order to dial a number, use the following procedure:

  1. Press SND to initiate the call.
  2. Press END after the call is completed.

In order dial a number by recalling a specific memory location, use the following procedure:

  1. Press RCL.
  2. Enter two digits of the desired memory (01,05, etc.).
  3. Press SND to initiate the call.
  4. Press END after the call is completed.

In order to dial a number from the scrolling phone memory, use the following procedure:

  1. Press RCL.
  2. Scroll the phone memories with the volume control keys on the left side of the handset.
  3. Stop the scrolling when the desired number is reached.
  4. Press SND to initiate the call.
  5. Press END after the call is completed.

Placing Calls Using the Steering Wheel Controls (SWC)

  1. Tap up on the phone switch to access the phone mode.
  2. Tap up or down and hold the select switch to scroll the phone memories for the desired phone number. Phone numbers can be seen on the DIC display.
  3. Tap up the SND switch to initiate the call.
  4. Tap down on the END switch after the call is completed.

Placing Calls Using Voice Recognition

  1. Tap up and hold the phone switch for 1 second to access the phone's VR mode. A second option is to press the VR key on the handset.
  2. Speak the word Dial after the Ready Voice prompt.
  3. Speak the phone number you wish to dial after the Number Please voice prompt. After each spoken digit, the number will appear on the DIC.
  4. Speak the word Dial. The dialing voice prompt will follow.
  5. Speak the word Send in order to initiate a call.
  6. Tap down on the END switch or press the END key on the handset, after the call is completed.

Important: Speaking the word Clear will undo the last spoken digit. Speaking the word Help after the voice prompt will provide a list of commands via voice recognition. Speaking the word Cancel will take you to the top of the VR command list.
