Lighting System Description Exterior Lighting

Backup Lamps

The backup lamps turn on when the ignition is on and the shift lever is moved to REVERSE. The park/neutral position switch controls the backup lamps.

High Mount Stoplamp

The high mount stoplamp is in the center of the rear shelf panel. The high mount stoplamp operates with the rear stoplamps. The high mount stoplamp does not light during operation of the turn lamp system or the hazard lamp system .

Daytime Running Lamps

Daytime running lamps (DRL) are standard on all vehicles.

The DRL provides automatic on/off control of the headlamps in response to the level of ambient light and the position of the following components:

    • The gear selector lever
    • The ignition switch
    • The head/park lamp switch

When the ignition switch is in the RUN position and the gear selector lever is moved out of the PARK position, the high beam headlamps illuminate at about 70 percent of the normal operating intensity. The high beam headlamps turn off if the gear selector lever is returned to the PARK position or the ignition switch is turned off.

The headlamps and the exterior lamps turn on automatically at dusk. The headlamps turn off automatically and the high beam headlamps illuminate at a reduced intensity at dawn. You may turn the exterior lamps on at any time. Turning the headlamps on using the head/park lamp switch overrides the DRL system.

The DRL system consists of a light sensitive photocell and a lamp control module. The DRL system is in parallel with the regular head/park lamp switch. The head/park lamp switch must be off in order for the automatic DRL system to operate.

Front Cornering Lamps

Cornering lamps are an integral part of the headlamp assemblies. The cornering lamps operate when the headlamps or the parking lamps are on and either turn signal operates.

Front Park/Turn Signal Lamps

The park/turn signal lamps are an integral part of the headlamp assemblies. The park/turn signal lamps are located at the inner edge of the headlamp assemblies. The lamps consist of a clear lens, a park bulb, and a dual park/turn signal bulb.

Front Side Marker Lamps

The side markers are amber in color. The side markers light whenever the park lamps are turned on. The side marker lamp assemblies are in the front bumper fascia.

Hazard Flasher

Depressing the hazard warning button energizes the hazard flasher. The hazard flasher operates regardless of the ignition switch position. The turn signals do not work with the hazard flasher on.

When the hazard flasher is operating the following lamps flash:

    • The turn signal indicator lamps
    • The front and rear turn signal lamps
    • The front side marker lamps

All of the signal lamps will light continuously if the brake pedal is depressed while the hazard flasher is on.

Headlamps

Each composite headlamp consists of one halogen low beam bulb and one halogen high beam bulb. The bulbs are not interchangeable. The headlamps are assembled to the headlamp housing panel. Adjust the headlamps by using the screen/wall method. The headlamps are controlled by the head/park lamp switch and the twilight sentinel.

License Plate Lamp

The license plate lamp is located in the license pocket. The lamp illuminates whenever the head/park lamp switch is in the ON position.

Twilight Sentinel

The twilight sentinel is a feature that provides for the automatic on/off control of the headlamps in response to the level of ambient light. The twilight sentinel keeps the lamps on for a preselected time period after the ignition is turned to the OFF position. The headlamps turn off automatically after the preselected time period elapses.

When the ignition switch is on and the head/park lamp switch is off, the system turns the headlamps on when road illumination becomes necessary. As daylight increases in the morning and illumination is no longer needed, the headlights turn off. The system consists of the following components:

    • A light sensitive photocell sensor
    • A lamp control module
    • A time delay control with a momentary off switch

The automatic twilight sentinel circuit is in parallel with the regular head/park lamp switch. The head/park lamp switch must be in the OFF position for the automatic twilight sentinel system to operate.

The photocell sensor mounts with the light sensitive surface face up in the instrument panel defroster grille. This mounting location exposes the photocell to the ambient light through the windshield. The lamp control module mounts behind the instrument panel.

A time delay circuit in the lamp control module reduces the probability of the headlamps switching on or off while the vehicle passes under viaducts, trees, bright lights, etc. The time is normally 23 seconds. The time cannot be adjusted. The variable twilight sentinel control adjusts only the time delay period during which the headlamps remain on after the ignition is turned to the OFF position. You may adjust the time delay from a few seconds to 3 minutes.

You cannot permanently turn off the twilight sentinel switch. If you move the switch to the OFF position, the twilight sentinel switch will automatically return to the ON position when you release the switch. While in the vehicle is in PARK, with the ignition in RUN, the headlamps may be cycled off if the headlamps have turned on automatically by moving the switch to OFF. The headlamps will return to automatic operation when you shift the vehicle out of the PARK position.

The headlamps remain on after the ignition is turned to the OFF position if the head/park lamp switch is in the ON position. A warning chime sounds when the driver's door opens in order to remind the driver to turn off the head/park lamp switch.

Rear Side Marker Lamps

The rear side marker lamps are on each side of the rear bumper fascia. The lamps operate in conjunction with the taillamp circuit. The lamps activate when the head/park lamp switch is in the ON position, or when the twilight sentinel system activates the lamps.

Taillamps

The rear lamp system performs the tail, stop, and turn signal functions. The rear lamp system consists of quarter panel mounted taillamps and a backup lamp assembly mounted to the rear compartment lid. The outboard portions of the backup lamp assembly also perform tail, stop, and turn signal functions. Each lamp has a red lens and 2 bulbs.

Turn Signal Operation

The turn signal lamps are combined with the parking lamps in front and the taillamps in the rear. Separate bulbs are used for the turn signal function in the rear. The ignition switch must be in the RUN position for the turn signal lamps to operate.

The lane-change turn signal feature is standard equipment. The driver has the option of moving the multi-function turn signal lever to a detent stop when making a partial turn, such as when changing lanes. The signal lamps flash as long as the lever remains in the detent stop position. The signal lamps cancel automatically when the lever is released. You may signal a shallow turn to lanes by using the detent position. Move the multi-function turn signal lever past the detent position to the travel limit in either direction in order to provide the conventional turn signal operation.

Lighting System Description Interior Lighting

Ashtray Lamps

The ashtray lamp is on the top center of the ashtray. The ashtray lamp lights when the park lamps or headlamps are on.

The underhood lamp lights when the hood is raised and the headlamp/park lamps are ON.

Lighting System Description Head/Park Lamp Switch

The head/park lamp switch is in the instrument panel to the left of the steering wheel. The head/park lamp switch controls the following lighting systems:

    • The headlamps
    • The taillamps
    • The park lamps
    • The side marker lamps
    • The instrument panel lamps
    • The courtesy lamps

The automatic ON/OFF exterior lighting control is available with twilight sentinel. An audible alarm warning is wired into the headlamp control system. The audible alarm warning sounds a chime if the head/park lamp switch is ON, the driver's door is opened, and the ignition key is turned to OFF, LOCK, or ACCY.
