Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the hood.
  2. Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  4. Remove the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .

  5. Depressurize the fuel lines.
  6. Drain the coolant. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  7. Drain the engine oil.
  8. Remove the radiator hoses.
  9. Remove the heater supply hoses.
  10. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  11. Remove the power steering pump. Set the pump aside.
  12. Disconnect the intake air temperature sensor.
  13. Remove the air flow duct.
  14. Remove the throttle cable from the throttle linkage.
  15. Disconnect the battery wire from the generator.
  16. Remove the fuel feed and return lines from the fuel rail and the pressure regulator.
  17. Remove the brake booster from the engine vacuum connections.

  18. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  19. Remove the exhaust pipe from the right manifold.
  20. Remove the wiring harness connectors from the following locations:
  21. • The MAT sensor
    • The throttle position sensor
    • The idle air control valve
    • The oxygen sensor
    • The A/C compressor
    • The oil pressure switch
    • The power steering cutout switch
    • The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
    • The low oil level sensor
  22. Remove the A/C compressor from the engine. Tie the compressor back away from the engine.
  23. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the engine block.
  24. Remove the flywheel cover.
  25. Remove the starter motor.
  26. Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts. Refer to Automatic Transmission.
  27. Remove the right front tire and wheel.
  28. Remove the right engine splash shield.
  29. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  30. Remove the engine to transmission brackets.
  31. Remove the right lower transmission to engine bolts.
  32. Lower the vehicle.
  33. Remove the generator rear brace.
  34. Disconnect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
  35. Remove the cruise control stepper motor from the cowl and set aside.
  36. Attach a suitable lifting hook and chain to the engine lifting brackets.
  37. Raise the engine slightly to take weight off the mounts.
  38. Remove the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  39. Remove the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
  40. Remove the accessory drive belt and the supercharger belt (if equipped)
  41. Remove the four engine to transmission bolts.
  42. Remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lower the engine.
  2. Install the four engine to transmission bolts.
  3. Install the accessory drive belt and the supercharger belt (if equipped)
  4. Install the engine mount bracket. Refer to Engine Mount Bracket Replacement .
  5. Install the engine mount. Refer to Engine Mount Replacement .
  6. Remove the chain and lifting hook from the lifting brackets.
  7. Install the cruise control stepper motor to the cowl and set aside.
  8. Connect the engine harness connector at the bulkhead.
  9. Install the generator rear brace. .
  10. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle suitably. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Install the right lower transmission to engine bolt.
  12. Install the engine to transmission bracket.
  13. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  14. Install the right engine splash shield.
  15. Install the right front tire and the wheel.
  16. Install the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
  17. Install the starter motor.
  18. Install the flywheel inspection cover.
  19. Connect the negative battery cable to the engine block.
  20. Install the A/C compressor to the engine.
  21. Install the wiring harness connectors to the following locations:
  22. • The MAT sensor
    • The throttle position sensor
    • The idle air control valve
    • The oxygen sensor
    • The A/C compressor
    • The oil pressure switch
    • The power steering cutout switch
    • The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
    • The low oil level sensor
  23. Install the front engine splash shield.
  24. Connect the exhaust to the right exhaust manifold.
  25. Lower the vehicle.
  26. Connect the brake booster vacuum hose to the engine.
  27. Connect the fuel feed and return lines to the fuel rail and the pressure regulator.
  28. Connect the battery wire to the generator.
  29. Connect the throttle cable and the cruise control cable to the throttle body.
  30. Install the air flow duct.
  31. Connect the air temperature sensor electrical connection.
  32. Install the power steering pump to the engine.
  33. Install the accessory drive belt and supercharger belt (if equipped). Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  34. Connect the heater hoses to the engine.
  35. Connect the radiator hoses to the engine.
  36. Fill the crankcase with oil.
  37. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling and Engine Mechanical Specifications .
  38. Install the fuel injector sight shield. Refer to Fuel Injector Sight Shield Replacement .
  39. Connect the negative battery cable.
  40. Install the hood.
