CAMPAIGN:FUSE IDENTIFICATION (INSTALL NEW FUSE BOX LABEL)

SUBJECT: FUSE IDENTIFICATION LABEL

MODELS AFFECTED: CERTAIN 1991 LESABRES

This is a Customer Satisfaction Product Improvement. Dealers need not follow-up with owners. Dealers should install labels on involved vehicles in their inventory and those where the customer requests the dealers' assistance. Campaign follow-up lists (after initial mailing) and ranking information will not be maintained.

Certain 1991 LeSabre model vehicles were built with an incorrect fuse identification label on the back side of the fuse panel access trim plate. These vehicles were built with correct fuses; however, should a fuse "blow" in one of the circuits labeled with an incorrect value and the owner or technician adheres to the fuse information label, several conditions could occur if the wrong fuse is installed.

o If the fuse value specified on the label is lower than the circuit requires, repeated fuse failure could result.

o If the fuse value specified on the label is higher than the circuit requires, there is a potential to damage the wiring in that circuit should another high current incident occur.

To prevent the above conditions from occurring, correct fuse identification labels will be provided to the owners of record and dealers to install over the incorrect label.

Dear Buick Owner:

General Motors has determined that certain 1991 LeSabre model vehicles were built with an incorrect fuse identification label on the back side of the fuse panel access trim plate. These vehicles were built with correct fuses; however, should a fuse "blow" in one of the circuits labeled with an incorrect fuse value, several conditions could occur if the wrong fuse is installed.

o If the fuse value specified on the label is lower than the circuit requires, repeated fuse failure could result.

o If the fuse value specified on the label is higher than the circuit requires, there is a potential to damage the wiring in that circuit should another high current incident occur.

WHAT WE WILL DO

Buick Motor Division, for your convenience, is sending you the enclosed correct fuse identification label for you to install on the back side of the fuse panel instrument panel access trim plate. Or you may contact your Buick dealer to have the label installed. This service will be performed for you at no charge. If you choose to have the dealer install the label, take this letter and the label provided with you to the dealership.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Please install the enclosed label by removing the instrument panel access trim plate and sticking the new label over the old label on the back side of the trim plate. Instructions for trim plate removal are shown on page 273 of your 1991 LeSabre Owner's Manual. For your convenience, these instructions are duplicated on the back side of this letter. After you install the label, or if you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid owner reply card enclosed and returning it to us. As mentioned previously, you also have the option of taking your vehicle, and the label provided, to your Buick dealer for installation. If you decide to have the label installed by the dealer, please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much time will be needed to schedule, process and repair your vehicle.

We are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

Fuses and Circuit Breakers

The wiring circuits in your car are protected from short circuits by a combination of fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible thermal links in the wiring itself. This greatly reduces the chance of fires caused by electrical problems.

You'll find some spare fuses in the fuse block. Be sure to use the correct fuse. If you ever have a problem on the road and don't have a spare fuse, you can "borrow" one of the correct value. Just pick some feature of your car that you can get along without - like the radio or cigarette lighter - and use its fuse, if it is of the value you need. Replace it as soon as you can.

Open the driver's door and remove the light switch trim panel as shown.

The fuse chart, below, shows how to tell a blown fuse from a good fuse.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
