The improper gate plate is installed.

1. Inspect the gate plate.
2. Replace the gate plate as needed. Refer to Shift Indicator Adjustment .

The linkage is maladjusted.

1. Inspect the linkage.
2. Service the linkage as needed. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .

The shift lever is loose.

1. Clean the shift lever.
2. Inspect the shift lever.
3. Service the shift lever as needed. Refer to Shift Lever Replacement - On Vehicle.
