Problem

Action

A burr is on the upper and/or lower end of the shift tube.

  1. Inspect the shift tube.
  2. Service the shift tube as needed. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

The column is misaligned.

  1. Inspect the following components:
  2. • The alignment
    • The mounting
    • The bearings
  3. Repair the components as needed. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  4. Inspect the alignment. Adjust the alignment as needed.

The shaft seal is incorrectly installed

  1. Inspect the shaft seal for correct installation.
  2. Reseat the shaft seal as needed. Tighten the shaft seal to specifications.
  3. Replace the shaft seal as needed. Refer to Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

Incorrect screws are used for ignition switch.

  1. Inspect the ignition switch for any damage that may be caused by the incorrect screws.
  2. Replace the screws with specified screws. Refer to Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Ignition and Key Alarm Switch Assembly - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The seal or bearing is not lubricated with grease.

  1. Inspect the components.
  2. Service the components as needed. Reassemble the components. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift) or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle or Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle .

The lower bowl bearing is incorrectly assembled.

  1. Inspect the lower bowl bearing.
  2. Service the components as needed. Reassemble the components. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

A wave washer has burrs.

Replace the wave washer as needed. Refer to Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Floor Shift) or Steering Column Housing - Disassemble (Column Shift).

The shift cable binds.

  1. Verify that the cable is correctly installed.
  2. Service the cable as needed. Refer to Range Selector Lever Cable Replacement .
