MOAN/WHINE/VIB. NOISE WITH TCC APPLIED

MODELS AFFECTED: 1989 CENTURY WITH 3300 ENGINE (VIN CODE N) AND 125C TRANSAXLE

Owners of 1989 Centurys built before VINs:

equipped with a 3300 engine and 3 speed automatic transmission may comment of a moan/whine/vibration type noise during and after transmission Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) apply.

This condition may be repaired by rerouting the (existing) transmission cooler hoses per the following procedure. The attached illustration shows the proper rerouting.

Procedure

IMPORTANT: None of the metal lines/fittings should have to be disconnected from the coolers or transmission to perfom this procedure. Also, no new hoses will be required.

1. Place vehicle on hoist.

2. Remove the rubber hose and clamp from the auxiliary cooler lower fitting. Install it on the auxiliary cooler upper fitting after removing the existing upper hose and clamp. Install the removed upper hose and clamp onto the lower auxiliary cooler fitting.

3. Remove the rubber hose and clamp from the lower cooler line at the transmission. Install it on the upper cooler line at the transmission after removing the existing upper hose and clamp. Install the removed upper hose and clamp onto the lower cooler line at the transmission.

4. Remove the rubber hose and clamp from the lower cooler line at the radiator. Install it on the upper cooler line at the radiator after removing the existing upper hose and clamp. Install the removed upper hose and clamp onto the lower cooler line at the radiator.

5. Ensure that all hoses and clamps are installed secure, and not in contact with any other vehicle component (i.e. hose clamp contacting A/C accumulator). Hoses must not be kinked, twisted or crossed.

6. Lower vehicle, and check the transmission fluid level per Service Manual Section 7A. Also, check for any fluid leaks.
